The webinar explored the European Commission’s proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 and its implications for future EU climate and environmental spending. The session reflected on how the structure of the next EU budget could shape the Union’s ability to meet its Green Deal objectives, international climate commitments and wider environmental priorities.
The discussion focused on the proposed budget architecture, climate and environmental spending targets, and the risks and opportunities created by the new framework. Particular attention was given to the treatment of climate and biodiversity funding, the integration of environmental programmes into broader instruments, and the extent to which the proposal supports a credible and ambitious green transition.
The webinar opened with remarks from Kate Grinfogele from the EEAC Secretariat, who introduced the Multiannual Financial Framework and its relevance for advisory councils. It featured contributions from Jeanet Benschop and Rob Williams from Trinomics, who presented their analysis of the environmental impacts of the MFF proposal prepared for the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee. Xavier Sol from Transport & Environment also shared his assessment of the current debate surrounding the next EU budget and its implications for climate and environmental spending.
The webinar provided valuable insights into the role of the EU budget in advancing climate and environmental objectives and offered reflections to support advisory councils in assessing the priorities, gaps and potential impacts of the proposed framework.
